Chloe’s first year at Discovery Agency

Wow, I can't believe I've already been at Discovery for a whole year! - I guess they say time flies when you're working hard and having fun! I’ve faced a lot of interesting challenges, but what a fantastic start to my career in digital marketing with the best team. So, to commemorate a year at Discovery, here are some of the highlights from my time so far:

My time so far

I've had a great time working with all of my clients, from pet portraits to digital printing and IT services, and the list continues to grow! The variety of accounts I manage certainly keeps me busy, but it also means that every day is unique and there is always something new to do and learn. I've met some amazing people, and it's been a pleasure to work with them to increase social media engagement, website traffic, and so much more. The amount of positive feedback I've received from my team and clients has been invaluable!

My previous experience

I had nine months of agency experience working as a digital marketing apprentice in a previous placement before starting at Discovery. I'd approached the managing director, Steve Harrison, about continuing the remainder of my apprenticeship with Discovery, which specialises in website design and development, search engine optimisation (SEO), pay-per-click (PPC), social media marketing and conversion-rate-optimisation (CRO).

Because I had initial experience working in social media marketing, blog writing, and public relations (PR) prior to starting with Discovery, I knew I could add value to the team and its services whilst also learning other areas of the business. Using the skills of the Discovery team, I've been able to expand on my knowledge of SEO, PPC, and website development, which has allowed me to gain a better understanding of digital marketing as a whole. This has helped me in my new role as I start to become more client facing and when handling client communications.

My interests and strengths

I've always enjoyed the visual aspect of social media because I come from an artistic graphic design background (I studied art and graphic design in school). I realised just how much I enjoyed writing after taking English as a subject in college. This piqued my interest in pursuing a career in marketing as I could combine both interests to create social media content and write blog articles. I could let my creativity run wild and come up with some fantastic ideas for content. Working at Discovery has encouraged me to improve my copywriting skills because I’m required to create social media content and blogs on a daily and weekly basis as part of my job role. The more I write blogs and social media content, the easier and faster they become to write with each passing day.

My accomplishments

The main one, of course, is finishing my 18-month digital marketing apprenticeship in December. Second, securing a promotion with Discovery following the completion of my apprenticeship, which meant that I could begin the new year fresh in my new role as a junior accounts executive. I've been in my new role as a junior accounts executive for the last 6 months and it's going great!

Last year, I entered one of Janet Murray's monthly social media diary competitions with a client's social media post that I was very proud of: a fantastic pet portrait of a sea turtle in a pirate costume, with a post to go with it promoting World Oceans Day and some great social statistics to back up the engagement it received. I'd submitted all of the evidence and, a few weeks later, received an email from Janet Murray informing me that I'd won, along with a £50 Amazon voucher. I have a habit of winning a lot of Amazon gift cards.

My overall time here at Discovery

The Discovery team has made my team so enjoyable. They're all very supportive, whether it's a morale boost, a second opinion, or simply someone to vent to. We've had some fantastic team outings, such as going to the nearby zoo, visiting Heart Radio in Leeds, picking up new exotic fish for the office fish tank, and many more trips to come.
